Bert K. Given Obituary

1935 ~ 2024

Auburn – Bert K. Given, 89, longtime resident of Jay, went home to be with the Lord early in the morning of Wednesday, May 15th at Clover Health Care in Auburn, with his daughter by his side. After a lengthy battle of dementia, he has found his peace. He was born April 7, 1935, in the Cascades area of Berlin, New Hampshire, the son of Hubert J. Given and Delma (King) Given. He and his twin brother Charlie were the youngest of 6 children. The family later moved to Chisholm where Bert grew up. Due to the early passing of his parents and his general dislike for school he quit after completing 8th grade and began working whatever jobs he could obtain. In his late teens his career with International Paper began, starting at the Otis Mill and continuing at the Androscoggin Mill, retiring in 1996 as a Power Plant operator. He proudly served in the U.S. Army Reserves and National Guard. Bert married the love of his life, Joyce Hinkley, on July 24, 1955, at her parents’ house in Jay. They were married 63 years. Bert was a devoted husband and father as well as friend to everyone he met. He was a longtime member of the Jay Baptist Church where he served as deacon for a number of years. Bert was also a member of the International Paper Company Quarter Century Club. He enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and spending time with the family he loved so greatly. He is survived by his son, Greg Given and wife Polly of Kokadjo and Jay, his daughter, Sharon Rowles of Waterboro, grandsons, Jason Rowles and wife Nicole, their son Ryan and daughter Elliana, Douglas Given and his wife Anna, their daughters, Belle and Bianca, Robert Given and his wife Brandi, their daughters, Rielyn, Hannah and Sadie, Mark Given and wife Amy, her sons Joel and Brody Soper, Scott Rowles and his fiancée Wendy Wheaton-Wing, his son Cameron and daughter Cassidy and great-granddaughter, Bradie Reynolds and her partner Richard King, and their son Richie. He was predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Delma (King) Given, wife, Joyce, infant son Mark Daniel Given, sisters, Louise “Crit” Couture, Betty Gingras, and Helen Marie Knight, and brothers, Richard “John” and Raymond “Charlie" Given. The family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at Pinnacle Health Care in Canton, the Galway Unit of Clover Health Care and the hospice team from Androscoggin Home Healthcare & Hospice for the love, care and support they provided during this difficult time.
