Richard "Dick" Shanahan Obituary

Richard “Dick” J. Shanahan “Men of few words are great men.” – Henry V 111:2 (Shakespeare). Dick, aged 91, passed away on May 15, 2024, in Maumee, Ohio. Born on August 6, 1932, in Toledo, Ohio to Daniel and Hazel (Kelly) Shanahan. Dick dedicated 40 years of his life to Surface Combustion. Beyond his professional life, Dick was a devoted volunteer at Historic St. Patrick, where he selflessly served the community. Dick’s passion for woodworking was evident in his beautiful creations. He crafted intricate dollhouses, toy boxes, and cabinets, leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship and creativity. His attention to detail and love for the art form inspired those around him.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Esther Shanahan; son, Michael (Diane) Pozniak; daughter-in-law, Cathy Pozniak; granddaughters, Jen (Joe) Deardorff and Jill (Scott Hoernemann) Pozniak; and great grandchildren, Claire, Molly and Gavin Deardorff and Cooper Hoernemann; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Daniel (Sue), Brother Tobias of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Order “Dave Shanahan”, and Terry; son, Robert Pozniak; and great grandson, Joshua Robert Hoernemann.

Dick will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. His memory will live on through the tangible beauty he brought into the world and the kindness he shared with others.

Funeral services will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Arrangements by Maison-Dardenne-Walker Funeral Home, Maumee, OH.
