Richard Allen Sabias Obituary

Richard A. Sabias

Kawkawlin, MI

Richard Allen (Dick) Sabias, age 69, passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2024. Married for 38 years to his wife, Barbara Sabias, family was always the heart of Dick’s world. Welcoming their first born, a baby girl in 1988, building their Kawkawlin home and welcoming the addition of their son in 1991, were all the beginnings of a home centered around family gatherings, celebrations and precious memories. Four wonderful grandchildren arrived years later and Dick’s focus on family was obvious as he immensely enjoyed spending time supporting everything FAMILY!

Dick found a passion for construction at a young age, working as a union laborer until becoming a well-respected Building Inspector in Bay County, serving Monitor Township since ’87 and presently serving Kawkawlin, Beaver and Frankenlust today. Dick also spent time filling in as the Inspector for the City of Essexville and Williams Townships over the years. His passion and dedication to his title were obvious by the way he worked with and treated county residents and contractors. His reputation of integrity and respect speaks volumes, “working with you, and not against you” was his mantra.

When enjoying his free time, Dick had a passion for camping, golfing, fishing, wood working, enjoying the pontoon and the family pool as well as doing what the grandkids wanted “Papa” to do! In years past, Dick would have been found playing pool (once in Las Vegas) and even playing drums in a band. Dick found a dedicated golf partner in his grandson, Chase, a hobby they’ve continuously enjoyed together! Dick can even boast two “hole in ones” with the same club. Dick never went without a four-legged friend, with “Levi” being his faithful companion the last six years.

A graduate of Central High, Dick was a contractor, building Western High, where his wife, children and grandchildren did, do and will attend; a forever connection to “Papa.” Dick will be remembered as loving, thoughtful, generous, kind, handy, friendly, and patient. He will be sadly missed, but his memory and examples will live on.

Richard is survived by his wife, Barbara (Bragiel) Sabias, daughter – Summer (Scott) Schmidt, son – Rich (Cassie) Sabias, grandchildren – Chase, Owen, Macie and Palmer Schmidt, sister – Patti (Dale) Mudd, brother – Marlon Sabias, sister-in-laws Joanne Schmidt, Gail (Craig) Vennix, brothers-in-laws- Joe Bragiel, Mike (Toni) Bragiel. He was preceded in death by parents Richard & Sandra Sabias, Frank & Wanda Meerdo (parents that raised him), in-laws – Joe & MaryEllen Bragiel, brother-in-law – Mike Schmidt, and brother Clinton Sabias.

Visiting hours and funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Rivertown Funeral Home, Kawkawlin. Visiting hours will be held 2-6 pm and a committal service at 6 pm. We wish to thank everyone for their support and expressions of love. It is greatly appreciated at this difficult time.
