John Michael "Mike" Morel Obituary

John Michael "Mike" Morel was born in Baltimore to John August Morel and Gwendolyn Jean Morel on July 30, 1962. He was 61 years old when he passed on May 14th at University of Maryland Medical Center following complications from a scheduled heart surgery. He is survived by his wife Lori (nee Stevens), daughter Jane, her husband Damian, and sons, Jacob, his partner Emma, and Luke. Also survived by his two younger sisters, Maribeth Morel-Smith, her husband Bruce and their son Garrett, and Lydia, her husband Richard, and their children Conner, Madison, and Jenna. Further survived by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mike was a contractor by trade and his work is showcased in many homes in the Pasadena area, but spans to parts of Annapolis, the Eastern Shore, and one home in Pennsylvania. From plumbing to electric to mechanics, in addition to carpentry, there was nothing he came across that he could not fix or improve. His family and friends benefited greatly from his work and will be remiss to continue all things without him.

He loved being an avid part of the Lake Shore Baptist Church community for the past 33 years and spent many hours gladly volunteering his time to help serve God. Mike committed his life to Christ through listening to WRBS and everything he did from then on was because of his love of God and his desire for others to know Christ as he did. From teaching the 4-year-olds, to 3rd grade, to middle school Sunday school classes to leading bible studies for adults and small groups in his home, sharing the love of God was a beloved vocation. Many mission trips through Habitat for Humanity and mFuge as well as various camps through church were blessed by his presence and guidance. He was chosen more than once to aid the church in the search of new leadership because of his fair and just attitude. In addition, he enjoyed learning new hobbies such as the A/V system for various services. He was great at seeing the best in people and always, always had positive accounts of everyone he met.

Mike was an avid napper and enjoyed playing cards with his wife and denying falling asleep in various places around the house. His goofy sense of humor was a trademark of his personality, and he loved spending time with his equally goofy kids. Other talents include but are not limited to; flying stunt kites on the beach, sewing dresses and Halloween costumes, racing his 1969 Corvette Stingray (very long ago), and being good at everything he ever tried.

We are so glad he is no longer in pain and is with the Lord. He will be greatly missed.

A service and gathering of friends and family will be held at Lake Shore Baptist church Sunday May 19th at 5:00pm. All are welcome to come and share in the memory of an incredible person, beloved by many. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of Mike's favorite ministries: Operation Christmas Child, Grace and Hope Mission, Compassion International, or Bright FM.
