Donald "Donnie" LeDrew Obituary

LeDrew

Donald "Donnie"

June 30, 1960 - May 16, 2024

The family of the late Donald (Donnie) LeDrew are heartbroken to share his passing at the James Paton Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 63.

Donnie was the first of seven children born to Ben and Dorothy LeDrew of Wing’s Point. He spent most of his life in his dump truck travelling the Gander Bay and surrounding area, many of those years with his side kick Keisha on his lap. He was well known, either by name or “the guy with the dog in the dump truck”. We are pretty sure he has backed in every driveway at least once. Not much made him happier than leaving for the pit or garage in the morning. He loved to spend his evenings with the I Pad and phone chatting with other contractor buddies about equipment, browsing the Buy and Sell while his wife, Arlene, sat within arms reach in Ear Pods watching tv.

He loved to see wild rabbits in the yard, feeding crows on the back deck and there were times when equipment wouldn’t be used until the robins eggs hatched in the nest he’d found on it. Killing a squirrel was a big no-no. He enjoyed treks on the side by side so much he would actually park the equipment to go for a spin...definite proof it was a happy place for him.

He loved his family and his grandchildren always got a little present from Pop’s pocket when he saw them. He was proud of his boys and the men they had become.

Donnie’s three year battle with cancer was difficult but he faced every challenge with amazing courage and determination. He never once complained and stayed positive and hopeful right to the end. Beneath his tough exterior beat a huge heart that wanted so desperately to stay. He will be immeasurably missed by his wife, Arlene. Their seventeen years together were spent in a peaceful harmony neither thought could exist.

The family would like the thank the staff of the JPMH Cancer Clinic, especially Tammy and Maralee, Drs. Culleton and Blundell, Dr. Dawn Armstrong of Eastern Health for Don’s amazing care during his weekly visits.

We would also like to acknowledge the exceptional care he received at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto. Dr. Marcus Butler and his team provided amazing treatment options and support that gave Donnie the opportunity to make many more special memories that he was so grateful for. He always left the hospital with renewed hope due to their positive approach to his illness.

Donnie is predeceased by his father Ben LeDrew, mother in law, Arlene Budgell, infant grandson, Jack LeDrew, sisters in law Teresa LeDrew and Donna Budgell.

He leaves to mourn his heartbroken wife, Arlene; son Shannon, wife Jen, Emily, Riley and Summer, son Shawn, fiancée Patty Lynn and Zachary, step daughter Heidi, husband Stephen, Oscar and Vada, step son Brent and wife Susan, mother Dorothy LeDrew, grandmother Emily Coates and father in law Carl Budgell. His siblings: Brenda (Toby), Harry (Christie), Elizabeth (Perry), Jerry, Gordon, Morley (Crystal), Loretta (Noel), Brothers in law Carl (Hilda), Perry (Debbie) and Ray, and their families.

Family will be accepting friends at the Pentecostal Church, Wing's Point on Tuesday, May 21st from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 P.M. Funeral service will take place on Wednesday, May 22nd at 2:00 P.M.
