Doris Irene Reed Obituary

Doris Irene Reed, age 93, of Harrisburg, passed away on May 8, 2024.

Born on August 12, 1930 in Nassau County, NY, she was preceded in death by siblings; Sydney Reed and Charles Reed.

Doris worked in a wide variety of places, including Harrisburg Hospital, Holy Spirit Hospital, Service Master, the Executive

House and the Game Commission in Texas, where she lived for a time with her brother Charlie.

She was passionate about cleaning, took great pride in it, and was a true example of blooming where you are planted.

Doris loved to volunteer, and she derived great pleasure in helping others. Sometimes it was through acts of service, like helping in a hospital or in the kitchen at Market Square Church, and sometimes it was helping young mothers buy strollers or diapers. She had a heart of empathy for anyone who was struggling.

Doris excelled at sewing, and she often made her own clothes. She was also quite skilled at cross stitch, crocheting, tatting and quilting. Like so many other crafters, she never had enough storage space for all the balls of yarn she’d accumulated.

Doris was a daughter, sister, and an aunt, but because of circumstances in her life she was fairly removed from those roles. thanks to efforts of a friend, she was able to reconnect with family and it was something she was always grateful about.

There was a quirkiness about Doris, as anyone who loved her would readily admit, and there was also something charming and engaging about her. She was rarely without someone nearby who was happy to assist her in her walk-through life, and she was so fond of saying to anyone around her, God Bless…. I Know He will.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Market Square Presbyterian Church, 20 South Second Street, Harrisburg, PA 17101.
