Herschel “Herky” Arden Meredith, Jr., 80, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Baptist East Hospital in Louisville, KY.


Herky was born in Bowling Green, KY in 1944. He graduated from College High and completed his Bachelor of Science in 1968 and his Master of Arts in 1971, both from Western Kentucky University. He moved to Louisville in 1968 and started his career as an Industrial Arts teacher at Stuart Middle/High School for 30 years. In 1975 he began collecting stones and logs from across KY to craft his log home which became a lifelong passion. After his teaching retirement, he was the owner and operator of Meredith Sealcoating for 21 years.


Herky was a graduate in 1960 from the Arthur Murray Schools of Ballroom Dancing where he received a Bronze Medal. In 1989 he was one of the founding members of the Derby City Bop Club in Louisville, KY. The American Bop Association inducted Herky into the Hall of Fame in 2008 He was also a member of the Rat Racers of Louisville. Over the years Herky was recognized for his dancing abilities in jitterbug, bop, shag, swing, cha cha, waltz and rat race.


He was an avid hunter, woodworker, fisherman, and antique collector. He spent many years creating and selling woodworking items in the St. James Art Fair and also had a picture framing business. Whether it was dancing, telling a joke, doing a magic trick, reciting a poem, telling a famous “Herky” story, or showing you the log home he built, he always lit up the room.


Preceding him in death are his parents, Herschel Arden Meredith, Sr. and Ruth Johnson Meredith. Herky is survived by his daughter, Emily Carey (David, Jr.); son, Bradley Meredith; sister, Carol McElheney; grandchildren, Jackson and Colton Carey; fiance, Connie Tate; and niece, Donna Shockley (Matt).


His funeral ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Joseph E. Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 7336 Southside Drive, with burial to follow in St. Andrews Cemetery.


Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Saturday at Ratterman.
