Doris Jean Powell Obituary

Devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend, Doris Jean (Vest) Powell, born July 24, 1932, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, departed peacefully to her heavenly promise, May 15, 2024, in Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by loving husband, William James Powell, twin sons, Steven and Stephan Powell; parents Harold and Alvina (Hilsmier) Vest; brother, Harold Thomas Vest, Jr. (Irmgard); sisters Helen Louise Bojrab (Shuckery), Marie Johnson (Nils), Thelma McCallister (Bud), and granddaughter, Rebekah Jean Parker. She is survived by sons, William David Powell (Roberta) of Punta Gorda, FL, James Thomas Powell (Jan) of Gulfport, MS; daughters, Kathi Louise Parker (Jim) of Wheatland, WY, Kristi Marie Risk (David) of Spencer, IN. Her heritage currently includes 15 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Doris was a licensed practical nurse at Community East Hospital, Indianapolis. Throughout her nursing career as a neurological nurse, Doris played an instrumental role in bringing compassion and joy into the lives of those she touched. Her compassion and expertise were evident with every person she cared for as she treated her patients like family members. Countless families were blessed to have her care for their loved ones. Her interests included crocheting, knitting, oil painting, gardening, tending her plants and flowers, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine for 31 years and currently of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellettsville for 20 years. She loved her Lord Jesus, family, and friends deeply.

Doris last advice for all reading is to share the peace that comes when one has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; that passing from this earth to the next is a beautiful opportunity to live eternally with a Father (John 3:16) who loves unconditionally by trusting in Jesus Christ as savior. (John 14:6; Acts 4:12)

Showing will be at Trinity Lutheran Church, Saturday, May 18th, from 11:00am until 1:00pm. The funeral will follow at 1:00pm.

Immediately following the service, Doris will be transported to Zion Lutheran Church in New Palestine for a committal service at 3:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
