Herbert L. Riecken Obituary

Herbert L. ‘Herb’ Riecken 86 of Fremont, Nebraska passed away Tuesday May 15, 2024 at his home. He was born August 26, 1937 in Wann, NE to Bernard and Bertha (Adams) Riecken.


Herb graduated from Ashland High School. He married Nancy Hosch on May 23, 1958 at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Herb served in the Nebraska Army National Guard from September 24, 1956 to September 23, 1959 and then the US Army Reserves until March 20, 1963. He was a Thoroughbred owner, breeder and trainer. Since the age of 3 Herb has had horses. After working with several owners breaking and training horses he started working for himself, and by 1969 he was a major figure in Nebraska’s horse racing industry. Most notably owning and training the Doctor, “Who Doctor Who” to be exact. He ran in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Louisiana, Arkansas and Nebraska during his seven years of competition. In 2006 Herb was inducted into the Nebraska Horse Racing Hall of Fame.


He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Fraternal Order of Eagles, both in Fremont, Horseman’s Benevolent protective Association, and the Nebraska Breeders Association.


Herb was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Lester (Vivian) and Keith; sisters, Corrine Sachs and Shirley Stouffer.


He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Fremont; daughters, Cindy (Brian) Crease of Omaha and Terri (Terrence) Seawall of Fremont; four grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.


Memorial Service will be 11 A.M., Saturday, May 25, 2024 at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. Rev. Tony Dawson will officiate. Memorial visitation will be 9:30 to 11:00 A.M., Saturday prior to the service.


Interment will be at Ridge Cemetery in Fremont at a later date.


Memorials are suggested to the Dodge County Humane Society.
