Joyce Reagin Obituary

Mrs. Joyce Walise Abbey Reagin, age 90, of Smyrna, Georgia went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, May 14, 2024. Joyce

was born January 18, 1934 to Newton Walter Abbey and Sophie Louise Abbey of Atlanta, Georgia. She graduated from Hoke

Smith High School in 1951 and went on to study English at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. After having graduated

in 3 years, she began her teaching career at the age of 20 at Fulton High School where she taught 12 th grade English. In 1957 she married Lewis Madison Reagin of Atlanta and went on to have 3 daughters. After moving to Smyrna in 1969, Joyce

began teaching 8 th grade English at Floyd Middle School until her retirement in 1987. She believed in service to others and

did so throughout her lifetime. She was very involved in First Baptist Church of Smyrna, where she was a member for 55

years. She served in numerous organizations including the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home, the Smyrna Lioness Club, the

National Educators Association, the Georgia Association of Educators, the Smyrna Junior Woman’s Club, the Bennett

Woods Garden Club, Disaster Relief and the Cobb County Board of Elections.


Joyce never met a stranger and always took the opportunity to share her Christian faith with those she came in contact. She

loved her family, Sunday school friends and former students and was always involved in their lives and proud of their

accomplishments. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many and will

be greatly missed. 


Mrs. Reagin was preceded in death by her husband Lewis M. Reagin and daughter Rhonda Hydrick. Surviving are daughters

Elizabeth Trail of Smyrna and Kathy Croxton (Larry) of Woodstock, grandchildren Michael Hydrick (Hannah), Steven Trail,

Justin Trail, Chris Croxton (Courtney), Matt Croxton, great grandchildren Kayla, Collin, and Addison Hydrick, Kendall,

Alexa, Dalton, Maddie and Chloe Croxton. The family will receive friends from 2-5 pm Sunday, May 19, 2024 at the

Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna. A funeral service will be held 11 am Monday, May 20, 2024 in the sanctuary of the First

Baptist Church of Smyrna with Dr. Jeff Pennington officiating. Interment will be in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery.


In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home.
