While working at the VAMC, Jerry earned a BA from Nazareth College and subsequently a Masters in Social Work from Western Michigan University. Upon earning his MSSW, he was hired by Family and Children's Services in Kalamazoo before being hired by the Battle Creek VAMC as a clinical social worker. In December 1992, Jerry retired from the VAMC with 32 years total service to the US government.

A devout Christian, faith was a central part of Jerry's life. In 1975, Jerry and Etta became members of Second Missionary Baptist Church in Battle Creek. Some years later, Jerry and Etta joined New Deliverance Missionary Baptist Church in Battle Creek where Jerry taught Sunday School, served on various committees, and was ordained as a deacon under the sponsorship of Reverend William J. Wyne. Jerry ultimately served as the Head Deacon of New Deliverance Missionary Baptist Church until he recently transitioned to Deacon Emeritus.

Jerry was involved in numerous community activities and organizations including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Battle Creek, the Battle Creek NAACP chapter, and Toastmasters International. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling with his family, fishing, gardening, painting, and antiquing.
