<p>&nbsp; </p><p>Shirley Diann Herrell, age 69 of Monroe, passed away peacefully, in her home, surrounded by her loving family at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024. She had been in declining health since being diagnosed with stage 4 an atypical carcinoid tumor in January. </p><p>Born June 28, 1954, in Middlesboro, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Thurman and Emily (Ervin) Herrell. Shirley was a lifelong homemaker. She could often be found at her kitchen table, enjoying a hot cup of coffee, and having a cigarette. Shirley enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was known for mothering many children in her neighborhood. Shirley was proud of her southern heritage, often cooking fried potatoes, soup beans, cornbread, and fried cabbage for her friends and family. She also enjoyed baking cakes. </p><p>To cherish her memory, Shirley leaves two children, Shaun Wilson and Emily (Alex) Carey-Hayes both of Monroe; three brothers: Ford Herrell, Lonnie Herrell, and Billy Herrell; one sister, Mildred Stanley; Fourteen grandchildren: Destiny Jennings, Desmariah Jennings, Marcus Carey, Xavier Hayes, Alantay Hayes, Wesley Hayes, Kylah Carey, Daisha Wilson, and Shaun Wilson Jr., Jakai McKinnon, Allaja McKinnon, Semaj McKinnon, Alex Whitley and Deseray Pickett; and thirteen greatgrandchildren. </p><p>In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Carey; twin grandsons: Rolland James and James Rolland Hayes; infant grandsons: Malachi and Aiden Wilson; three brothers, Virgil Herrell, James Herrell and Clifford Herrell; and two sisters, Lizzie Dee Stanley and Della Joyce Herrell. </p><p>Family and friends may visit from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Rupp Funeral Home, 2345 S. Custer Road, Monroe, MI 48161, where services celebrating her life will begin following visitation at 4 p.m. Rev. Harold Raines, Pastor of Monroe Full Gospel Church, will officiate.
