Raphael Andamo Mitchem Obituary

Raphael Andamo Mitchem “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 Raphael Andamo Mitchem, age 61, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, peacefully passed away on April 24, 2024. He was born on November 27, 1962, in Chicago, Illinois. He retired from the Chicago Police Department and moved to Georgia in 2019. Raphael, known to many as “Domino” and “Big Sweat,” had a big smile, big heart, and big personality. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Raphael took great pride in being a father to his three beautiful daughters and cherished his time with family and friends. He attended St. Felicitas Grammar School in Chicago, De La Salle Institute in Chicago, and graduated from Columbia College Chicago with a degree in Television Production. He later graduated from the Chicago Police Academy. Raphael loved “being the police” and took great pride in his career. He served the Chicago Police Department for nearly 30 years, where many of those years were with the Organized Crime Division – Narcotics Section. Raphael received numerous merit and commendation awards for his dedication and service to the community and to the Chicago Police Department. He later worked as an Assistant Rural Carrier at the United States Postal Service in Snellville, Georgia, as a Security Officer at Warner Media in Atlanta, Georgia, and as a Public Safety Officer at Piedmont Healthcare in Snellville, Georgia. In addition to his law enforcement career, Raphael had a diverse range of hobbies and interests. Raphael, “Gymshoe,” was a founding member of the Blue Saints Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club in Chicago, and he had a love for everything Harley Davidson. His love for renovating houses, watching movies, listening to 80s music, smoking meats, and cooking trays of food for loved ones brought joy to many. Raphael is survived by his wife, Erika; daughters, Rachel, Michelle, and Ashley; and his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, James Edgar; mother, Lydia Marine (Moore); and brothers, Thomas, James, and Cameron. A memorial service to honor and celebrate Raphael’s life will be held at True Vine Church of God In Christ, 400 23rd Avenue, Bellwood, Illinois, on Friday, May 17, 2024. Family time will begin at 11:30 AM, followed by the service at 12:00 PM. In lieu of flowers and other tributes, funeral expense donations are greatly appreciated. Monetary donations can be made through GoFundMe.com. Additionally, the family requests that you take a moment to cherish your loved ones and find peace in a good memory, a short walk, or a ride in nature. The funeral arrangements are being handled by D. L. Perkins & Sons, LLC, located at 1923 South Mannheim Road, Westchester, Illinois, 60154. Raphael will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace and love.
