Billy Ray Sowers Obituary

Billy Ray Sowers, 81, of Vinton, VA,  went to his heavenly home on May 14, 2024 surrounded by his family.  He was a devoted man of God and a member for many years at Parkway House of Prayer where he enjoyed fellowship and a special bond with his men’s bible study group.

Bill was a Foreman at Norfolk Southern Railway where he spent 31 years of dedicated service. He was a Master Mason of Chamblissburg Masonic Lodge #179 and a member of the Oddfellows Beaverdam Lodge #248. His commitment to service and helping others enriched the lives of those around him.

Among his many passions, Bill found joy in being outdoors. He took pride in his beautiful garden where we could always count on having green beans, potatoes, blackberries, and tomatoes. Where his heart beamed the most was when he would spend countless hours fishing at his favorite family pond and being a true craftsman of making homemade lures. His love for the outdoors was surpassed only by his affection for his beloved wife of 61 years, Virginia.

Known for his contagious smile and warm spirit, Bill was a natural born jokester who brightened the lives of everyone he encountered. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and a profound impact on the hearts of many.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Isaac and Ora Sowers; two brothers, Eugene and Jack; and four sisters, Izola, Cleo, Bonnie, and Connie.

Surviving is his loving wife, Virginia; son, Billy Hedge; daughter, Gina Brown and husband, Dennis; grandchildren, Ashleigh, Megan, Madison, and Nataleigh; great-grandchildren, Luke, Taylor and Ashton; special nephew, Steve Amos; special niece, June Harless; and numerous other family members and friends.

In honoring his memory, let us celebrate the life of Bill, a remarkable man whose light will continue to shine in the hearts of those who were fortunate to call him a friend, family, or neighbor.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2024, at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel, 627 Hardy Road, Vinton, VA. The Funeral Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Parkway House of Prayer, 3230 King Street, Roanoke, VA. with Dr. Dave Keep and Pastor Jeff Allen officiating.  Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, 1401 Mountain View Road, Vinton, VA.
