Duncan Goodridge Clifford Obituary

***Obituary submitted by the family.

Mr. Duncan Goodridge Clifford, age 86, of Bedford, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at his home. He was surrounded by family and his loving wife of 66 years, Joyce.

Duncan enlisted in the US Navy in 1956 but was given a hardship discharge when his father passed away. He returned home and spent the rest of his life on the family farm. He married the love of his life, Joyce Evelyn Staples on July 19, 1957. Together they raised four boys: Gregory Neal, Steven Reed, Troy Wade, and Scott Eric. In the early years, Duncan spent his days farming and working with a local construction company. He assisted with the construction of the Trimble County High School where he learned the trade. He used those skills to create the Clifford Company and spent several years building homes in the community, including the development of Rolling Acres Subdivision. Inevitably he returned his attention to the family farm and he and Joyce spent countless hours operating a fully functioning dairy. For twenty-three years they worked side by side balancing the daily duties of running a dairy and farming, before they decided to “retire” the business. Although they continued raising tobacco, hay, soybeans, and working cows, Duncan often found time to build things. He was a gifted woodworker and was known as a man who could fix anything. The kids and grandkids were always happy to receive one of his creations. He was a hard worker and gave each day his best effort. He will be deeply missed by his family, loved ones, and his best gal, Gabby, his Border Collie.

His surviving family includes his wife, Joyce Evelyn Staples Clifford; four sons: Gregory (Jill), Steven (Angel), Troy (Lori), Scott (Stephanie); eleven grandchildren: Joshua (Angelique), Justin (Jackie), Matthew (Faron), Emily (Zach), Reed (Lexi), Nicholas (Tori), Courtney, Kaylee, Logan, Nathan, Zachary; six great grandchildren: Bailyn, Briley, Cash, Adelyn, Hadleigh, Reagan; one brother: Donald (Diane).

He was preceded in death by his parents; Russell Boyd Clifford and Ester G. Goodridge-Clifford; and one brother, William (Billy) Hume Clifford.

The Honor Guard from Samuel Woodfill Post #9, American Legion, Madison, Indiana will conduct military honors.

There will be no visitation.
