William "Bill" Edwin Grunden, Jr. Obituary

William “Bill” Grunden Jr., beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 13, 2024, after a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease. He was 72 years old.

Bill was born on August 19, 1951, in Milford, Delaware, to William and Mary Ellen “Sapp” Grunden. He was the oldest of six children.  After graduating from Dover High School in 1969, he proudly served his country by joining the Army. Following his service, he continued his commitment to duty, later retiring from the Army National Guard.

In 1992, Bill met and married Jo Ellen Gibbs, becoming a loving and devoted husband. Throughout their 31 years of marriage, they shared countless cherished memories. They enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending time with friends and family. They enjoyed taking scenic drives together looking for deer and stopping at roadside stands.

Bill had a deep love for the beach and warm weather.  He couldn’t resist a drive down to Rehoboth Beach to enjoy a bucket of Dollie’s caramel corn.  He also had a passion for working on cars, spending countless hours tinkering and fixing vehicles. He had a unique way of dancing, with his fingers pointed to the sky, bringing smiles to those around him. His love for his pets was evident in the joy and companionship they brought him.

Bill will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and emotional side. He had a warm and compassionate heart that touched those around him. His sense of humor and laughter were contagious.  Despite his battle with Parkinson's Disease, he maintained a positive outlook on life and never lost his determination to live each day to the fullest.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William, and Mary Ellen “Sapp” Grunden, his sister, Gloria Jean King and brother, Jerry Lee Grunden.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ellen, brothers Rick Grunden (Peggy) and Randy Grunden (Jennifer), sister Teresa Grunden (Tim Stevens), his daughters Shelly and Stephanie Grunden, stepchildren Eric Lefort and Andrea Knutzen (Brian), grandchildren Jayden Grunden, Ryan, Andrew and Jake Lefort and Blakely Knutzen, his faithful, furry companions Penny, Jack, Cindy, Bailey and Mia and host of relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of life on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at 3:00pm at his home, 1119 Bison Road Dover, DE 19904. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, in honor of William Grunden Jr’s memory.

Though he may be gone from our sight, Bill Grunden will forever remain in our hearts, remembered for his love, kindness, and enduring spirit.
