Josephine Downs

<p>Josephine “Joann” Blacka Downs, of Farmington, CT, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2024. Born in Plantsville, CT, Josephine was the first-born of Walter and Anna (Zajac) Blacka. She graduated from Southington High School and quickly went to work at Barnes Group in Bristol, CT. </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine married the love of her life, Robert L. Downs, on August 23, 1958. Together they moved to Bristol, CT where they built a beautiful life. Josephine worked at Barnes Group for nearly 20 years in several positions in Payroll and Engineering. However, the highlight of her career was her daily lunch dates with Robert as he was employed at Barnes Group, as well. </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine was a devoted and loving, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband Robert of 66 years, her sons Roger Downs (Connie) of Dandridge TN, and Brian Downs (Mary) of Simsbury, CT.</p><p><br></p><p>Her devotion continued to expand with the arrival of her beloved grandchildren, Shane R. Downs (Jacqueline) of Waterbury, CT, the late Brett R. Downs, Brian H. Downs of Atlanta, GA, Kevin J. Downs (Laura) of Atlanta, GA, and Emily Downs Brzozowski (Thomas) of Cleveland, OH and four great grandchildren, Brett Downs of Naugatuck, CT, Damon Downs of Milford, CT, Jackson and Savannah Downs of Waterbury, CT. </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine is also survived by her sister, Catherine Mackenzie of Bristol, CT, and her family. </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine was never happier then when the family was gathered for a birthday, holiday, or summer picnic. She was a talented cook and baker and was known for her exquisite cookie trays and carrot cakes. When she wasn’t busy preparing delicious food, she was busy sewing Halloween costumes, cozy pajamas for her grandchildren, or beautiful window treatments for her loved ones. Her handiwork was on display everywhere you looked bringing warmth and beauty. </p><p><br></p><p>Her instinct to nurture was not limited to her family as Josephine was equally talented in the garden. She took great pleasure in her garden, growing exquisite roses, clematis, and lilacs. Her instinct was always to bring beauty to her home and family; inside and out! </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine enjoyed over thirty years of retirement with Robert. During that time, she fulfilled her dreams of exploring the world. She was able to visit much of Europe and the Far East, collecting memories to be shared for years. Although she traveled extensively, some of her happiest adventures were hot air balloon rides on beautiful mornings in Connecticut. </p><p><br></p><p>The family would like to thank the staff and administration at McLean Health Center in Simsbury, CT for the care, kindness and compassion that was provided to Josephine during her time there. </p><p><br></p><p>Josephine will be buried at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Plantsville, CT at the convenience of the family.
