Stanley "Stan" James Petty Obituary

Stanley James Petty of Terre Haute, Indiana, passed away on the morning of May 13, 2024. He was born in Heyworth, IL, on February 25, 1944. His passing was preceded by both parents, James and Elaine Petty and his wife Mary Jean Petty. He is survived by a sister Rita Gibson of Normal, IL, son Britt Petty wife Lori, their children Ellese, Jessica and Cade, daughter Susan Carter husband Matthew.
Stan grew up farming with his parents in Hayworth, IL, he was an avid athlete, playing 4 years of college level football and track & field. A Graduate of Illinois State University with B.S. and M.S, inducted into the Illinois State University Hall of Fame he found his true passion during his many years coaching at Bloomington High School.  He and his wife relocated to Terre Haute, IN, in 1978 opening Stan’s Fitness Center, where he was an early pioneer in the wellness and fitness movement which later swept the country in the 90’s and which remains in business after 46 years. 
A celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 18th at Rose Hulman White Chapel, 6:00 - 8:00 pm. Arrangements were entrusted to DeBaun Funeral Home. In lieu or flowers, donations may be made in remembrance of Stan and in honor of his beloved dog, Blue.  * Please note:  The family is not able to accept flowers for the service.  While the sentiment is appreciated, they are not able to transport back to their home location out of state.  Cards are welcomed and donations to the Terre Haute Humane Society are encouraged.  You may make an online donation by visiting www.thhs.org.
