Barbara Jeane Harris Obituary

Barbara Jeane Harris, age 76 of Wellsville, Kansas passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Advent Health Shawnee Mission. Visitation will be from 1-2:30 PM followed by a Celebration of Life 2:30-3:30 PM, Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Wilson Funeral Home in Wellsville, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Zebediah Scott Harris Scholarship Fund in care of Wilson’s, PO Box 486, Wellsville, Kansas.

Barbara Jeane Harris was born December 22, 1947, in Chanute, Kansas the daughter of Dale and Betty (O’Brien) Edwards. She grew up in Chanute and was the oldest of three children. From the age of 14 she was “a love as true as” Larry’s and from there the story began of making each other’s life complete.

Barbara received her high school diploma from Chanute High School in 1964 and in March of 1965 she married Larry Eugene Harris of Chanute who served in the Army as a mechanic. They were stationed in Fort Hood, TX. Later they made their home in Lenexa, Kansas where they started their family but ultimately moved to the country of Wellsville, KS where they raised four children, Heather, Scott, Rebecca and Sarah.

Barbara was initially a homemaker and supported her husband’s career in construction and hobby farming while her children were attending school. She later became employed as the Site Manager for the Wellsville Nutrition Center. She loved her job there and was more than just a manager to those who ate there. She often played cards with them and became their friends. Her side job was a rural paper carrier for the Ottawa Herald, and then she retired as a bank teller later in life working for Gardner National and Patriots Banks in Wellsville.

Barbara lived an exciting life at first traveling with Larry who served in the Army, experiencing several trips with family and friends, and then enjoying retirement life at Grand Lake, OK. She always put family first and would accommodate her children and grandchildren’s schedules above her own. Her home was a place to hang out; so often one may think there was always a party going on due to so many vehicles being there.

Barbara was an American Legion Auxiliary member and a member of the Crescent Club in Wellsville. She did not know a stranger and many community members became well acquainted with her through her employment in Wellsville.

Her expressive nature will be most missed–she was direct but everyone loved her for it. Some of her hobbies (past and present) included bowling, playing cards, baking (chocolate chip cookies and cinnamon rolls were always devoured quickly), sewing, reading, visiting the casinos, traveling, riding motorcycles, dancing, enjoying lake life and visiting with friends and family.

Surviving family members include her husband, Larry Harris of Wellsville; children and grandchild Heather (Harris), Josh and Maverick Adams of Wellsville; children and grandchild Scott, Jenny and Lydia of Wellsville; children and grandchildren Rebecca (Harris), Garry, Chloe, Lillie and Emma Kate Goodloe of Ottawa; children and grandchildren Sarah (Harris), Jake, Soffia and Mykel Love of Wellsville; brother Steven Edwards of Chanute; sister-in-law Leesa Sands of Garnett; brother-in-law Donald Jones of Afton, OK and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding family members include her grandparents Clarence and Mabel (Fink) O’Brien; parents Dale and Betty (O’Brien) Edwards; brother Richard Edwards; and grandson Zebediah Harris.
