Lawrence Breen Obituary

Lawrence Edward Breen, 75, died at home in Mount Kisco, NY, on Wednesday, January 28, 2015, from complications related to surgery. Raised in Yonkers, NY, Mr. Breen was the son of Catherine and John Breen. He attended Mount Saint Michael High School in the Bronx, earned a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Albany and a Master's degree from New York University. Mr. Breen had a meaningful forty-year career as an educator. He worked first as a teacher at Lincoln High School in Yonkers, NY, and then spent thirty-seven years at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, NY, three years as a math teacher and thirty-four as Assistant Principal. He cared immensely about the students and staff at Greeley and enjoyed maintaining close relationships with them throughout his life. The qualities that made him a uniquely effective administrator also made him a caring father and friend: enduring optimism, a commitment to life-long learning, a passion for the present, a dedication to staying in touch, self-effacing humor and a sartorial flair. Mr. Breen was particularly proud of co-founding the Chappaqua Summer Scholarship Program, which provides for an alternative summer learning experience at Horace Greeley for students from New York City. Devoted to improving his community, Mr. Breen served on the New Castle Town Board from 1980 to 1984 and in retirement served on the board of the Chappaqua Children's Workshop and Open Door Family Medical Centers. He is survived by his partner Barbara Snyder, brother John Breen, sister Phyllis Kuhlman, children Colleen Wright, Kelley Cheek, Timothy Breen, Kerry Robinson and Joseph Breen, nine grandchildren, one great granddaughter and many other relatives and friends. Memorial gifts may be made to the Chappaqua Summer Scholarship Program, PO Box 456, Chappaqua, NY 10514. A memorial gathering will be held on March 14, 2015 from 2:00 - 4:00pm at Horace Greeley High School Auditorium and Cafeteria 70 Roaring Brook Rd Chappaqua, NY 10514 Arrangements are being handled by Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home.
