Nelda D. Knobloch Obituary

Nelda Lee Davis Knobloch Nelda Knobloch was born in Huntington, West VA to Lena Emerick and A. L. Davis, II on October 2, 1927. Her mother died very young and Nelda was brought to Petersburg, VA where she was raised by her grandparents. Nelda was a very bright student. As a young child, she studied dance and performed in revues. She was very artistic and drew, painted, and was a skilled photographer. She enjoyed writing letters and her choice of reading was non-fiction, essays and poetry. She loved listening to music. In high school Nelda participated in many clubs; she was the Vice-President of the Miller-Daniel Society, Treasurer of the Tri-Hi-Y Club, and a member Square Circle. Nelda graduated from Petersburg High School in 1944 and continued her education at Smith College the next fall at age 16. Nelda graduated Smith College in 1948 with a degree in zoology. One month after graduation, Nelda answered an ad for an Assistant job at the New York Zoological Society in the Bronx (Bronx Zoo) and she not only landed the job, but met her future husband, Herbert J. Knobloch. They were married one year later in June, 1949. She had other jobs during her lifetime including working for the American Cancer Society, and later when she and Herb moved to Virginia, she worked as a consultant for the United States Navy where she developed and taught a successful smoking cessation program. Other jobs utilized her artistic talents working with flowers and drawing. She also volunteered her time and intellect at the Virginia Living Museum for over 25 years teaching groups of students and families about the animal life in the touch tank. Nelda is predeceased by her devoted husband Herbert J. Knobloch, and loving daughter Rev. Donna Jean Knobloch. She is survived by her son, H. Davis Knobloch and wife Elyse, grandchildren Matthew Vissers and wife Kristen, Daniel Vissers and wife Carrie, Jason Knobloch and wife Erin, Adam Knobloch, and three great grandchildren, Ashlee, Gabriel and Fiona. Nelda was loved by all. She had a wonderful smile that lit up the room, was generous and a good listener. Having a conversation was always interesting with her bountiful knowledge of nature, horticulture, nutrition and science. She loved her family as they love her. She will be sorely missed. A memorial gathering will be at the Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home on Sunday, March 11, 2018 from 10am-12 noon. Eulogy and memorial orations will begin at 10:45am. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Jude's. Celebration of Life Cassidy-Flynn Funeral Home Inc. Sunday, March 11, 2018 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM 288 East Main Street Mount Kisco, NY 10549
