Althea Jean Johnston, age 93, of Council Bluffs, passed away May 9, 2024 at Risen Son Christian Village. 


Jean was born April 9, 1931 in Turin, IA to the late Delwin and Rebecca (Graybill) Hathaway. She graduated from Castana, IA High School in 1949. Jean married Philip Eugene Johnston on August 27, 1950 in Turin. They were blessed with five children, Gene, Kathleen, Patricia, Barbara and Dale. Jean worked at Campbell Soup and then for Farm Bureau for 20 years retiring in 1999. 


In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Philip Eugene Johnston in 2005; son-in-law, Curtis Tracy; sister, Mary Skaw; brothers, Donald, Francis, Warren and Howard Hathaway. 


Jean is survived by her children, Gene (Sue) Johnston of Council Bluffs, Kathleen (Steve) Harrison of Onawa, IA, Patricia Tracy, Barbara Johnston, Dale (Lisa Hurd) Johnston all of Council Bluffs; 9 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. 


Visitation with the family, Tuesday, 6-8 p.m. at Cutler-O’Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Graveside service and burial, Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. in Memorial Park Cemetery. Family and friends to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. for the procession to the cemetery. A lunch will follow at the Walnut Hill Reception Center, 1350 E. Pierce St. The family will direct memorials.
