Johnny Lenoir Powell, Sr. Obituary

Johnny L. Powell, Sr. of Portsmouth, VA; Beloved and Devoted Father, Husband, Brother, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, Uncle and Friend, went to be with his Lord and Savior peacefully in his home on May 7, 2024.


Johnny was Born on December 31, 1938 in Roanoke Rapids, NC. to the late Daniel Leroy and Mary Powell.


Johnny is predeceased in death by his loving wife, Carolyn Gartman Powell, brother William “Bubba” Powell, and Great Grandson. Waylon James Prevatte.


Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Johnny L Powell, Jr (Dawn) of Gates County, NC, Wendy L Carbaugh of Chesapeake, VA. Charles “Buzz” Guyot (Kelly) of Portsmouth, Mark Guyot (Laura) of Norfolk VA, Rick Guyot and Teresa Turner of Portsmouth, VA; Grandchildren John David Powell, Sarah Powell, Robert “Robbie” Prevatte, (Liz), Alexis Carbaugh, Dylan Carbaugh, Ashley Guyot, Amanda Chapelle, Colin & Declan Guyot, Justin Turner; “Great Grandchildren, Ryder Prevatte, Madelynn Graham, Jameson Luck and his sisters Mary Frances Ellington of Apex NC and Joanne Lindsay (Frank) of Chesapeake, VA. and a host of nieces and nephews.


Johnny joined the Air Force in 1956 and continued his service in the Reserves until he was honorably discharged in 1962. He joined the Portsmouth Fire Department in 1960, where he achieved the top score that year on the entrance exam. He became a Lieutenant on January 1, 1968 and also earned the Top Driver award in 1982 and many safety driving awards throughout his career. In his 32 years of serving he saved countless lives, his unwavering love and commitment were evident in his dedication of serving and protecting the community, as well as the deep love he had for the fire department. Johnny also worked part-time for C.E. Nix & Sons for 28 years delivering oil to homes in the community.


Johnny worked tirelessly to provide for his family, nurturing them and providing unconditional love, support, strength and compassion. He was a very generous man and had a heart of gold, always willing to give to those in need. Everyone that spoke of him said he was the “Nicest” guy you’d ever want to meet.


Some of his hobbies included cooking, especially at the Fire Station. He loved traveling to the mountains with his wife Carolyn, watching sports, and he was a devoted Washington Redskins fan. He had a love for Elvis Presley and enjoyed listening to his music. He also had a deep love for animals and his face lit up with joy when he cared for his beloved cat, Buddy, aka ‘Kitty Boots’.


Johnny leaves a legacy that will carry on for generations to come and will be deeply missed by all.


He was a true American Hero!


The family would also like to express the depth of gratitude for the extraordinary care and support provided by the team of nurses, and aides of Trinity Hospice. The dedication, love and kindness brought comfort and solace to him and to us during this time.


Visitation with the family will be on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sturtevant Funeral Home Portsmouth Blvd Chapel, 5201 Portsmouth Boulevard, Portsmouth, Virginia 23701.


Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Sturtevant Funeral Home with a graveside service following at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens 3920 Airline Blvd, Chesapeake, VA 23321. Following the services, the family would welcome all family & friends at his home at 4900 West Norfolk Road. Portsmouth, VA.
