Martha Campbell Obituary

Martha Sue Campbell passed away May 2, 2024 in Toledo after a three-year battle with pulmonary and cardiac disease.

Born July 5, 1954 in Swartz Creek, Michigan, Martha was the youngest of four children to Mary Esther and Clem Rowe. She studied Criminal Justice at Michigan State University and earned her Master of Counseling at University of Toledo.

Martha met her husband Andy in Whiting, Indiana and they married in 1981. They had two daughters, Melanie and Elizabeth, who they raised in Toledo. Fiercely independent, Martha felt strongly about supporting young women’s self-determination. She was a Girl Scout leader and role model to her daughters and numerous other young women. For the last five years, she was also a doting grandmother to Oliver.

As a social worker, Martha worked in community mental health in the Toledo area for more than 30 years. She was passionate about service to high-need communities and social justice causes, and was deeply valued by her clients and colleagues.

Summer was Martha’s season. She enjoyed gardening, visiting the lake, and sitting outside while listening to her favorite music. She had an eclectic taste and enjoyed supporting small artists, surrounding herself with unique ceramics, artwork, and found objects.

Martha is survived by daughters Melanie and Elizabeth; grandson Oliver; sisters Ann (Gary) and Jane (Charles); brother Larry (Marty); dear friends Stephanie Berlin and Julie Syring; and countless nieces, nephews, friends, and colleagues. She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Esther and Clem; husband Andy; and son-in-law Matthew Ujvagi.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to a cause important to Martha such as community mental health, women’s rights, or other social justice causes.

A memorial service for Martha will be held on May 18 at noon at Grumpy’s downtown location (34 S. Huron St.) directly followed by an open house celebration of life. In Martha’s welcoming spirit, all are welcome to attend.
