John R. McFee, 63, of Creston, died Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Celebration of Life services will be 10 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2016 at the Powers Funeral Home 601 New York Ave. in Creston. Pastor Jim Morris will officiate. Burial will be at the Greenlawn Cemetery, east of Afton. Open visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 22 with family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Powers Funeral Home in Creston. Memorials will be determined by the family. Online condolences can be given at www.powersfh.com. John Reed McFee, son of Hugh Lynford McFee and Esther May (Pridgen) McFee, was born September 7, 1952 in Creston, Iowa. He was raised near Afton and educated at the East Union Schools through the 10th grade, graduating from Creston High School in 1971. John lived most of his life in the Creston area. One of his first jobs was with Pittsburg Steel in Des Moines. John had been married and divorced. Early on, he operated the Hobo's Hideaway bar in Creston. Truck driving was John's primary occupation. Early on, he did farm work and hauling for Buck Buxton and Kenny Calvin. He drove for Warner Trucking, Sheldon Trucking, other nationally known trucking companies, the Creston Co-op, and most recently with Mark O'Riley and numerous other area farmers. While living in Colorado, John also worked for John Henderson in Colorado, doing sales and repairs of typewriters and computers. John grew up in the Presbyterian Church in Afton, and was formerly a member of the Masonic Lodge of Afton. Survivors include his sister Kathryn (husband Jack) Adams of Creston, a sister- in-law, Carol McFee of Rosalie, Neb.; a brother-in-law, Lee Von Stein of Creston; 10 nieces and nephews, Dana (wife Shellie) Adams of Creston, Mike (wife Elizabeth) Adams of Lawrence, Kan., Darin (wife Cindy) Adams of Creston, David (wife Danielle) Adams of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Aaron (husband Ronnie) Harless of Glenwood, Brooke Burgoin of Glenwood, Carrie Dowda of Creston, JoAnn (husband Darrin) Nauman of Creston, Jarita (husband Doug) Heidebrink of Ottumwa and Rob (wife Jeanette) McFee of Dakota City, Neb.; 15 great nieces and nephews; and a great great niece and nephew. John was preceded in death by his parents, his 5 sisters, Ellen Von Stein, Mary Sevier and Karen Miller and two in infancy; and a brother, Bob McFee.
