John David James, lovingly known as "Daddy J," passed away peacefully on May 1, 2024, at his home in Powell, TN, at the age of 81, surrounded by his family. His departure, occurring on the very day he arrived, is a poignant reflection of his engineering mindset and his constant drive for efficiency.
Growing up as a self-described “corporate brat," John's early years were spent in the North East while his father climbed up the ranks at General Mills. He pursued higher education at The Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Texas, where he was an active member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. After earning his engineering degree, John moved to Atlanta, GA, where he met his sweet Southern bell, Judy, aka "Duet." Their 58-year marriage took them across various states due to John's engineering career, eventually settling in Oak Ridge, TN, where he worked at Martin Marietta. Throughout his accomplished career, John received multiple awards for his innovative contributions and service. A notable aspect of his work at ORNL is showcased at the Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge, TN.
John is survived by his wife Judy and their two sons, David (54) and Richard (51), who were with him in his last moments. Richard, who is married to Sherri, has twins named Ethan and Emma (20).
Known for his curiosity, sharp intellect, and passion for reading and investing in the stock market, John was also an avid golfer and former member of the Oak Ridge Country Club. An adept cook, he found joy in grilling and experimenting with new recipes, now leaving a void during family gatherings and holiday meals. He consistently made an effort to ask about his family's latest adventures and accomplishments.
Above all, John was a proud father and grandfather who never missed a game, event, or award ceremony. He always supported his family members and was never hesitant to challenge referees when he felt it was necessary. When the Twins went off to college – Ethan to the University of Alabama and Emma to the University of Tennessee – he proudly displayed school spirit with gifted mugs and gear. In his final days, he was wrapped in a special UT blanket that Emma had made for him when she was just a young girl.
John adored dogs owning many over the years but none as special as Max, his faithful companion. His family is finding comfort knowing he will surely be reunited with Max in Heaven for a long walk. John's legacy of kindness, intellect, and unwavering support for his loved ones will be cherished and remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His love of good coffee, good food, and most important good conversation will be missed but his legacy will remain always present in the hearts of those who loved him. Known for his kindness and generosity, John was generous in both spirit and in action, supporting charitable causes and a dedicated member of The Chapel on the Hill in Oak Ridge. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that gifts be donated to The United Chapel on the Hill Memorial Fund.
John’s family will be holding a celebration of life service on Sunday May 5th at 1 pm at The United Chapel on The Hill 85 Kentucky Avenue Oak Ridge TN 37830. A light reception will follow.
