Daniel “Dan/Danny” Robert Houdersheldt, 82, passed away April 19, 2024, in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Dan was born in Keyser, West Virginia and raised in Barton, Maryland by his grandparents, Wellington and Ella Conn. Dan moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1956 and graduated from Baldwin High School. Dan married the love of his life, Karen Houdersheldt (McCrea) in June 1964. Dan proudly served in United States Marine Corps from 1962 to 1968. Dan and Karen moved to Falls Church, Virginia in 1967 where they raised their three daughters. Dan retired as the VP of Finance and Administration from HEW Federal Credit Union after 30 years of service in the finance industry. During the course of his career, Dan served in multiple positions on the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Area Credit Union Management Association (MACUMA). Upon retirement, Dan and Karen moved to Blackstone, Virginia to enjoy some country living. In October 2021, Dan and Karen moved to Celebrate Retirement Community and began a new chapter in their retirement adventures.
Dan never met a stranger. He was known for his quick wit and instant smile. He loved meeting new people. He was patriotic and had a deep love of country which he instilled in his children. He never missed the opportunity to thank a veteran for their service. He was a longtime member of the Evergreen – Benjamin Masonic Lodge #131 (Crewe, Virginia) and the American Legion Lodge #189 (Barton, Maryland). He was known for his community spirit and generosity. Dan gave generously to various charities and volunteered his time to Habitat for Humanity. He served as a deacon and elder at the Blackstone Presbyterian Church and was a current member of Cornerstone Baptist in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and spent many years as a member of the Isaac Walton League. He was a softball umpire for the Fairfax County Adult Softball League for ten years. Dan spent many years coaching his daughter’s soccer teams and was always their biggest cheerleader, on and off the field. In 2013, Dan and Karen rescued Sadie, his beloved four legged best friend.
Dan is survived by his wife, Karen Houdersheldt, his daughters, Michelle Roman (John), Danielle Pinto, Patricia Jackson (Scott); 10 grandchildren: John Anthony Roman, Jr. (Monica), Joel Pinto, Tiffany Roman, Chelsea Pinto, Brooke Biggie (Logan), Tyler Roman, Ben Jackson, Hailey Roman, Abigail Jackson and Nate Jackson; and 8 great-grandchildren: Marleigh Pinto, Adrianna Shifflett, Bailey Dean, Tristan Biggie, Camden Shifflett, Lucian Biggie, Scarlet Dean, and Cole Shifflett; and sister, Carol Ann Baxter (Bob). Dan was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Coppock; great-granddaughter, Dixie Dean; and his parents, Daniel Robert Houdersheldt and Margaret Reasey.
Services will be held for Dan on Sunday, April 28, 2024, at 1 PM at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 56 McWhirt Loop, Fredericksburg, VA 22406. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held immediately following the service at a local location to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dan’s honor to Homes for Our Troops at https://www.hfotusa.org/. Homes For Our Troops is an organization dedicated to assisting unhoused American veterans.
