Marjorie D. Hayes Obituary

Marjorie D. Hayes, 87, transitioned peacefully at her home from this earthly life to her eternal life on April 5, 2024. Born in North Carolina, she was the oldest of 13 children to the late Russell and Margaret Blount.

A long-term member, Marjorie served on the usher board and was a proud member of Tabernacle Church. Working in her community throughout her life was a major part of Marjorie’s ministry to the community. Marjorie was a certified adult foster care provider for Portsmouth Social Services for ten years and fostered several adults throughout the years. She also worked and retired from MWR and Childrens Harbor.

Marjorie was the queen of hospitality and serving others. She loved cooking and entertaining her family. This joy and passion for serving others also extend to those in need. Her heart was always open to providing for the less fortunate. In her earlier years, she worked for the Harbor Club, where she supervised and trained employees in food service. In addition, she worked for Balabans for many years as the head cook until their closure in 1995.

Marjorie or “Mardean” as she is affectionately called by her siblings, was predeceased by her daughter Denise Redd (Julius) , one sister, Eloise White and six (6) brothers; Emphraim Blount, James Blount, Charles Blount, Ernest Blount, Milton Perry, Nathaniel (Jukie) Blount, and Clarence Blount

Marjorie leaves to cherish her precious memories a host of family and friends, which include her three (3) sisters; Tina Roberts, Sandra Covington and Hazel Jean Thomas, three (3) brothers; Marvin Blount, Leon Blount (Linda) and Alonzo Blount. She is also survived by her children; Michael Blount (Carol), Valerie Porter, Matthew Waters III, Janice Wray and special friend and caretaker, Gail Reynolds.
