Geraldine J. Murphy Obituary

Geraldine (Joyce) Murphy, age 87, wife of the late Fred M. Murphy of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2024 in Saint Mary Home. She was born in Hartford, CT, daughter of the late Gerald T. and Mary (Corcoran) Joyce. Gerry attended Wethersfield High School, was a proud graduate of Eastern CT State University, and a long-time communicant of Sacred Heart Church. Prior to her retirement, Gerry served as a teacher with the Hartford Board of Education for over 25 years, teaching at several schools, and touching the lives of a wide variety of students. With retirement came the joy of spending several winters at her home in Naples, FL in the company of her wonderful friends from college. Gerry loved the sun, and never met a beach she didn’t like. She was a very crafty person, enjoying needlework and time spent in the Wethersfield Garden Club. Gerry was an excellent correspondent, and never missed sending cards for birthdays, anniversaries, or, just because. She had a wonderful sense of style, with wardrobe, hair and makeup always done to perfection – she truly believed in always putting your best foot forward.

Gerry will be greatly missed by her daughter, Carol Sywenkyj and her husband Peter of Wethersfield, her grandchildren, Kara Brunk and her husband Zach, Erin Allard and her husband David, Ryan Murphy, Abigail Sywenkyj and Sophia Sywenkyj, and her great-grandchildren, Elle, Avery and William. She also leaves her son-in-law Chris Lyons, daughter-in-law Sharon Parro, sister-in-law Valerie Joyce and her longtime companion William Scheide, with whom she enjoyed many happy years, along with many cousins, nieces and nephews with whom she shared very special relationships. She was predeceased by her daughter, Sue-Ellen Lyons, son Kevin Murphy, and brother Richard Joyce.

Gerry’s family would like to thank her kind, compassionate, and devoted caregivers from The McAuley, New England Nightingales, and in her final days, Saint Mary Home. These very special people cared for her as if she was their own, ensuring that her final years were spent surrounded by peace, comfort and love.
