COLUMBUS, KANSAS: Charles Martin McKinley, age 84, passed away at 4:22 pm, Monday, April 1, 2024, at Mercy Hospitla, Joplin, Missouri.

Charles was born March 24, 1940, in Afton, OK. His parents were Charles Mack and Lena May (Carr) McKinley. He was a former resident of Wichita, KS.

He won hundreds of trophies, including two NHRA Wallys while drag racing in the NHRA Division 5 in Wichita. During that time, he developed an excellent reputation for building engines. He began working at Chet Wilson Racing Engines in Wichita for 9 years. He then became an engine builder at Performance Engineering for 4 years. After that, he continued building race engines as a pastime. Charles became a truck driver and purchased a semi-truck. He continued hauling freight until his retirement at age 78.

Surviving is one son, Cliff McKinley, Columbus, KS; one daughter, Donnita Pelser, Wichita; 7 grandchildren, Ryan, Sean, Heather, Devyn, Melissa, Jennifer, and Michael; and 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Mack McKinley, his mother, Lena May VanWinkle, and his brother, Hershal Leroy McKinley.

Charles was entrusted with Derfelt Funeral Home, Oswego, KS for cremation.
