Bertha (Majors) Smith, 88, of Monaca, a loving and devoted mom, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Thursday morning, March 4, 2010. Her passing occurred following an extended illness. Born April 9, 1921, in New Brighton, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary \”Mamie\” (Rhodes) Majors. She was a devout Christian who actively demonstrated her faith in numerous capacities. She and her late husband, Eugene, were one of the founding members of the former Sylvan Crest Free Methodist Church in Center Township. With their prayers and dedication, the church grew and relocated to its present location and was renamed Monacrest Free Methodist Church. She served as president of the Womens Missionary Society, the Childrens Ministries and the Young Peoples Missionary Society as well as church steward and a coach and quiz master of the Bible quiz team. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Eugene Smith, on Jan 29, 1998. The couple were united in marriage on Jan 27, 1937. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Russell, Roy, David and Edward Majors. She leaves eight children, Louise (Elmer) Preston of Monaca; Ronald (Phyllis) Smith of Enon Valley; Jack T. (Evelyn) Smith of Center Township; Paul (Jane) Smith of Monaca; Richard Smith of Boca Raton, FL and his daughter-in-law, Karen Smith, New Brighton; Mary (Nick) Hodnick of Monaca; Robert (Pat) Smith of New Brighton; William T. (Ana) Smith of Rochester Township; grandchildren, Carolyn Preston of Monaca; Brian (Shawn) Preston and two children of Warrenton, VA.; Tamara (Larry) Rowles and two children of Phoenix, AZ.; Tim Smith of Ventura, CA.; Taryn (Paul) Miller and two children of New Brighton; Tiffany (Brian) MacQuarrie and two children of Enon Valley; Cassandra (John) Moores and two children of Massillon, OH.; Jack Jr. (Robin) Smith of Cranberry Township; Kevin (Kelly) Smith of Johnstown; Keith (Ruth) Smith and two children of Rochester; Kirk Smith of Eglin AFB, Fort Walton, Fla.; Melanie Smith and daughter of Washington , PA.; Debbie Metalik and daughter of Georgetown; Nicholas (Abby) Hodnick of Pittsburgh; Lyndsay Smith and fiancee, Nate of Nashville, TN; Cory Smith of New Brighton; William J. (Tammy) Smith and two daughters of Etna; Thomas (Heather) Smith and two children; Jennifer Kokrugga of Rochester, and David Trotta of Rochester Twp. and a sister, Evelyn L. \”Dot\” Smith of New Sewickley Township. Friends will be received Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 2 to 8 p.m. in the SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, (724-728-4000). Friends will also be received on Sunday from 3 p.m. until the time of services at 4 p.m. at the Monacrest Free Methodist Church, corner of Elmira and Walnut Streets. Her pastor, the Rev. Doug Rabe, will officiate. Private interment will follow on Monday in Sylvania Hills Memorial Park. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, in lieu of flowers, may do so to the Monacrest Free Methodist Church Building Fund.
