Alvin D. Johnston Obituary

Alvin D. Johnston, 79 of Freedom (New Sewickley Twp.) passed away peacefully early Friday morning, June 24, 2011 at his home. A Monaca native, Al was born May 30, 1932, a son of the late John M. and Edith Johnston. In March of 1946 near the end of World War II, Al enlisted into the U.S. .Army and served with the 2151 Area Service Unit Med Detachment stationed in Italy. The majority of Al?s career was with Wyckoff Steel?s Ambridge plant from where he retired as a shipper following 30 years of service. Al was also employed by Guzyk Supply, Ambridge where he was known as J.J. Al was a long time member of the Freedom Sons of Italy. His favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing, camping and searching for bargains at the flea market with his wife, Sally. Al always kept busy with some kind of project. Al leaves his beloved wife of over 55 years, Sally Sands Johnston; two sons: James M. Johnston of Freedom and Dale M. Johnston of Dravosburg. Anyone who knew Al knew that he loved his two boys. Three grandchildren: James Jr.and fiance, Jenna of Beaver Falls, Danielle and Matthew and his wife, Natalie and their son, Hunter all of Freedom (New Sewickley Twp.). A brother, John Johnston and his wife, Dorothy of Monaca and a sister, Anne Leeper of Aliquippa. A brother in law, William ?Bill? Sands and his wife, Ruth of Clearwater, FLA and a sister in law, Janet Johnston of Economy Boro. Two former daughters in law, Sandy Johnston and Laurie Johnston. Numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by three sisters: Lois Russell, Mariam McGrail and Sara DeCaro and two brothers: Marty and James. Friends will be received on Monday from 2-8 pm in the Simpson Funeral Home, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca where relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service on Tuesday at 10:30 am. The Reverend Doug Rabe will officiate. Full military honors will be provided on Tuesday at 11:15 am at the funeral home by the Beaver County Special Unit. Interment will follow at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. .
