Jacob "Jay" A. Southward Obituary

Jacob “Jay” A. Southward, 74, passed away with family by his side on April 1, 2024, in Des Moines. He was born July 16, 1949, in Des Moines to Anzelo C. and Wynona “Toni” (Smith) Southward.


Jay graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1967. He joined the United States Navy September 28, 1967, and discharged July 6, 1971. Jay was on the ship, USS Ticonderoga and after the service he did the Navel Reserves period for four years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 689 of Runnells. He worked and retired as a truck driver for Van Wyk of Sheldon, Iowa. Jay enjoyed fishing, working on his acreage, horses, and most of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had a huge heart and would do anything for anybody, a proud Navy man, a huge Hawkeye Fan, watching NASCAR, enjoyed his country music and enjoyed most anything.


Jay is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; son, Bob (Nicole) Southward; daughter, Katie Snow; grandchildren, Cameron, Laura, Molly, Jakob, Connor, Lucy, Ethan, Natalie; great-grandchildren, Ellie and Wesley; brother, Gene (Carla) Barth; his best friend, David Kidd; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Dianna Stauffer; brother, Jerry Southward; grandson, Devin Southward.


Visitation will be 1-2 PM, Friday, April 5, 2024, at Iles Grandview Park Chapel. Service will follow at 2 PM with burial at Rising Sun Cemetery in Pleasant Hill where the United States Navy will provide the military funeral honors, American Legion Post 562 will provide the rifle volley and the Iowa Patriot Guard Riders will be present.


In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
