Lorraine J. Franek Obituary

Lorraine Franek, age 79, peacefully passed away in the company of her loving family on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 in her residence at Sunrise Brighton Gardens of West Orange due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in the Bronx, New York, on August 23,1944 to the late Alfred Della Volpe and Carmella (Mille) Della Volpe (Ravaschieri). Lorraine lived in New York City for 32 years before moving with her husband, Joseph, and young family to Hamburg, N.J. in 1976.

Lorraine attended Saint Catherine’s Academy in the Bronx, a school she loved. With diploma in hand Lorraine launched herself into several careers with a variety of employers—Freedomland U.S.A. (NYC’s rival to Disneyland), Western Union, Hirsch & Company stock brokage, Playboy International, U.S. Census Bureau, Jamesway Department Stores, and Selective Insurance Company, to name just a few. She was most proud of her longtime career at Selective Insurance Company, where she retired as a senior underwriter. Throughout her professional career and well into retirement, Lorraine also generously volunteered her time to various causes. Three volunteer activities which were sources of immense pride to her were Sussex County Meals on Wheels, the Beehive Thrift Shop, and physical therapy services for children. Her own kids refer to her as the Mother Theresa of northern New Jersey, a term of endearment that never failed to make her smile. She was a longtime and active member of St. Jude the Apostle Church in Hamburg, N.J.

Simply put, Lorraine never met a stranger and was the person anyone would want in their corner cheering them on. She was a loving mom, wife, sister, aunt, grandmother, mother-in-law, and trusted friend who will be dearly missed.

Lorraine was predeceased by her husband of 48 years, Joseph, her sisters Dolores and Louise, brothers Sal, Fred, Philly, and Ali. She is survived by her children Robert and his husband, Mario López-Cordero, of New York, New York, daughter, Lori Ann, of Brooklyn, New York, and Thomas and his wife, Angela, of Dunmore, Pennsylvania; as well as her stepsons Joseph S. and his wife, Christine, of North Carolina and Michael and his wife, Josephine, of Cortlandt Manor, New York; along with five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
