Mary was born on February 2, 1935 in East Leroy, Michigan to Wilbur Edward and Lois Estella (Klaiss) Finton. She graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1953. She remained in Battle Creek and worked for the local phone company. In the late 1950s, she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota to work for the phone company there. After a couple of years, she returned to Battle Creek and began working for the Federal Center in defense logistics. Her career there lasted 29 years.

In 1997, the couple moved to Bullhead City, Arizona to enjoy the beautiful weather and sunshine. Mary had always had a love for painting and while in Arizona, she began taking college art classes and became more involved with her painting. She won several art awards during her time out west. Her other favorite activity was doing puzzles. Mary and Edward moved back to Michigan in 2018 to be closer to family and made their home in Athens.
