Funeral services for Billy Bernard Whitten, 89, of Start, LA were held at 11:00 AM, Monday, April 1, 2024 at Crew Lake Methodist Church, Start, LA with Bro. Marshall Sevier and Rev. Ron Hollingsworth officiating. Interment was in Start Cemetery, Start, LA under the direction of Brown-Holley Funeral Home, Rayville, LA.

Mr. Billy was born March 6, 1935 in Start, LA and passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 in Rayville, LA.

Mr. Billy was a member of the Crew Lake Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mary Joyce Whitten; parents, Thomas “Daddy Burris” Whitten and Kate “Mama Kate” Whitten; and numerous brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his children, Denise Sapp and husband, Freddy of Start, LA, Todd Whitten and Romey Maloy of St. Augustine, FL, and Connie Skains and husband, Mickey of Start, LA; grandchildren, Landon Sapp and wife, Andrea of Monroe, LA and Cody Allen Skains and fiancée, Sharmaine Bayudan of Garland, TX; great grandson, Jacob Sapp of Monroe, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Charlie Hable, Rev. Ron Hollingsworth, Kevin Henry, Brad Sullivan, Jesse Fuller, and Lynn Word. Honorary pallbearers were Mickey Whitten, Sonny Whitten, Joe Whitten, Freddy Whitten, Roger Whitten, Jerry Robinson, Will Ed Dark, Brian West, and the Men of Crew Lake Methodist Church.

The family would like to give a very special thank you to Lanie “Bonnie” Gibson, Martha Parker, Brenda Bailey, and Anita McMurray for the exceptional care and compassion they gave Mr. Billy.  The love and support given was outstanding. Also, thank you to St. Joseph Hospice and Colonial Manor Nursing Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Crew Lake Methodist Church, P.O. Box 280, Start, LA 71279.
