Essie Marie Lee Obituary

Essie Marie Lee, age 87, was born March 12, 1937, in Kirbyville, Texas and ended her earthly journey, March 26, 2024, in Kountze, Texas.

Essie maintained her home in Buna, Texas, but spent the last 16 months in Paradigm’s Kountze nursing center where she quickly became a favorite, being named the Valentine’s Day Queen in 2023.

Essie graduated from Kirbyville High School in 1955. After graduation Essie worked for a brief time in the banking industry before eventually beginning a 30 plus year career at Texas Home Health. On February 12, 1983 Essie married

William (Billy) Lee and the community of Buna gained a very special lady. Essie was a leader everywhere she went. In 1970 she was awarded Woman of the Year by The American Business Women’s Association. In later years she was a proud member of the Red Hat Society, the library board, Women’s Civic Club of Buna, several cemetery committees, and an immensely proud member of the First Baptist Church of Buna. For all her accomplishments, we will remember her most for her elegance and class.

Essie is survived by her sisters Virginia McDonald Sheridan, Jean Cockerham, Linda Williams, Cheryl Ware; brother Gary Thompson and sister-in-law Gwen Thompson; nieces Melda McDonald Knapp, Jane McDonald Versyp, Carla McDonald Hooper, LaNita McBride Matlock, LaRonn McBride Curto, and Jennifer Thompson Willis; nephews Herschel McDonald, Chip McBride, and Tommy Thompson.

She is also survived by her bonus children William B. Lee II and wife Carlene, Paul Lee and wife Marsha, Joanna Lee Whitten and husband George, and Stella Lee Godbold and husband Lloyd; 12 grandchildren and numerous greatgrandchildren.

Essie is preceded in death by husband William B. Lee, parents Melda Bean Tucker and husband Willie, Curtis Thompson and wife Mirtie, daughter Myra McDonald Williams, bonus son Charlie Lee, sisters Kathy McBride and husband Weldon, Nancy Strong, brothers Lloyd Thompson and Randy Thompson.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 5-7pm Friday, March 29, 2024, and funeral services the following day at First Baptist Church of Buna beginning at 10am.

Memorial contributions can be made in her Honor to First Baptist Church of Buna.
