Phyllis J. French Obituary

Phyllis J. French, retired teacher at Kingswood-Oxford School in West Hartford, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 26th, 2024. Born August 29th, 1933 in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Lovell French of Windsor, CT. She attended the local schools, Oxford School and Vassar College where she matriculated in 1955. For one year she taught Latin and modern languages at Madison High School. When her parents moved to Bloomfield, she joined the faculty of Oxford School, later to become Kingswood-Oxford School, to teach the same subjects and act as coordinator of the modern languages department. She retired in June of 1992 after 36 years of dedicated service. She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church of Bloomfield and for nineteen years taught CCD classes, preparing second graders to make their first holy communion. She also worked part time at the Sacred Heart Rectory as secretary and weekend housekeeper. When Fr. Picher, Pastor Emeritus of Sacred Heart Church, retired in 1984, she offered him the hospitality of her home. He gratefully accepted the invitation with the approval and blessing of the late Archbishop John F. Whealon and resided there for 12 ½ years until his death in August 1997.


Friends may call at Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield on Monday, April 1st from 10:00-10:45am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Burial will be in the French family plot at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 26 Wintonbury Ave., Bloomfield, CT 06002.
