In the quiet corners of our hearts where memories linger like whispers in the wind, we hold dearly to the life of Joan Jennings-Staley. fondly known as Joanie. Her journey, marked by valor, compassion, and unwavering love, touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. With heavy hearts. we honor the profound legacy she leaves behind.


Joanie's story began on October 18, 1958, in the vibrant city of Paterson, NJ. From her earliest days, she possessed a spirit of determination and grace that would guide her through a life of service and purpose. Her dedication to duty led her to the esteemed ranks of the United States Army. where she served with distinction, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class.


Throughout her 31 years, five months, and 24 slays (if devoted service, including 9 years. two months. and 7 days of foreign service, Joanie exemplified the true essence of leadership and selflessness. As Assistant to the Deputy Assistant for Iraq Policy, and as Chief of Administrative Operations, she navigated the complexities of military life with unwavering resolve and dedication.


After retiring from the military, in her capacity as Housing Stability-Homeless Prevention Case Manages, VA Services for the Operation Renewed Hope Foundation, she found solace in assisting chronically homeless Veterans, mentally ill and dually diagnosed individuals into transitional shelter programs.


Her accolades, including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and numerous other honors. stand as testaments to her unwavering commitment to excellence. But beyond the medals and commendations, Joanie's greatest legacy lies in the hearts of those she touched along the way.


Joanie's love knew no bounds. She was a devoted partner to Johnny Garrett, her beloved companion of 30 years. Her family, including her brother Wayne Jennings, sisters Jean Jennings, Maureen Jennings-Edwards. Norma Jennings, and niece/goddaughter Natasha Jennings-McCall, sisters-in-law Tara Jennings and Juliet Howard. and La Tasha. Crooks. who was like a daughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends, were the true treasures of her life, She was preceded by her mother. Corrine Jennings. whom she loved beyond measure and brothers Gary Jennings and Benjamin Jennings.


In her spare moments, Joanie found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether cheering on her beloved Dallas Cowboys or volunteering as a guide at the National Museum of the United States Army she lived each day with art infectious zest for life.


But perhaps what we will remember most about Joanie is her indomitable spirit and infectious laughter. With her makeup perfectly applied and a twinkle in her eye. She would often reassure us with her trademark phrases: "Don't worry about me, fin going to be alright." "I like those. I need me a pair of them," and "Gurrrll. you know what!??" Her words of comfort and camaraderie will echo in our hearts for years to come.


Though she may no longer walk among us, Joanie's spirit will forever remain a beacon of light in our lives, as we gather to celebrate her memory, let us take solace in the knowledge that she has left an indelible mark on the world and enriched our lives in ways beyond measure. Rest easy Dear Joanie, knowing that your legacy of love and service will continue to inspire us all.


Joan Jennings-Staley, affectionately known as Joanie, departed this life on February 20, 2024, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after a brief illness. Born on October 18 1958, in Paterson, NJ, Joanie lived a life marked by courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication to others.


Joanie's remarkable journey began with her enlistment in the United States Army, where she served with distinction for over three decades, achieving the rank of Sergeant First Class. Her primary specialties in Paralegal and Human Resources paved the way for a distinguished career, during which she received numerous awards and commendations, including the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal.


Beyond her military service, Joanie's commitment to serving others extended into civilian life. She held various positions, including as a Housing Stability-Homeless Prevention Case Manager for VA Services partners and in. the U.S. tinny as a Senior Human Resources Program Specialist at the Pentagon. Joanie's impact was felt not only in her professional endeavors but also in her personal relationships. She was a beloved partner to Johnny 'Garrett for 30 years. Her family, including her brother Wayne Jennings, sisters Jean Jennings, Maureen Jennings-Edwards, Norma Jennings, and niece/goddaughter Natasha Jennings-McCall, sisters-in-law Tara Jennings and. Juliet Howard, and La Tasha Crooks, who was like a daughter, and a multitude of nieces, nephews, and friends meant the world to her. She was preceded by her mother, Corrine Jennings, and brothers Gary Jennings and Benjamin Jennings.


In her leisure time, Joanie enjoyed cheering on her favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys, and volunteering at the National Museum of the United States Army. Her vibrant personality and infectious laughter brought joy to all who knew her. Joanie will be remembered for her unwavering strength, compassionate spirit, and infectious zest for life. Though she may no longer be with us, her legacy of love and service will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know her.


She leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
