Marian J. Rabel, of Paterson, passed away on February 23, 2024. She was 84.
Born in Paterson and raised in West Paterson, Marian was one of three children born to Jessie and Anna VanValkenburg. She graduated from Passaic Valley High School and began her pursuit of a long career in education. As a devoted teacher and later a distinguished principal at School 8 in Paterson, Marian dedicated her life to shaping young minds and fostering a love of learning.
Beyond her professional achievements, Marian was known for her generous spirit and commitment to charitable causes. She selflessly gave her time and resources to make a difference in the lives of others, embodying the true essence of kindness.
As a mother and grandmother, Marian cherished her family above all else. She is survived by her sons, Gerald A. Rabel, Jr. and his wife Bonnie and Timothy B. Rabel; her brother, James VanValkenburg and his wife MaryLou; her sister, Debra Borst and her husband Alan; her grandchildren, Brenna, Jessica, Brianne, TJ and Christopher; and her great grandchildren, Emmett, Gabe and Vada. Marian was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Marie Ahmed.
Family and friends may visit from 4 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, February 25 at Scanlan’s Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. A funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am on Monday, 2/26 at St. Mary’s RC Church, Pompton Lakes. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Memorial Park, Totowa.
