James "Benjamin" Merrell Obituary

Mr. James Benjamin Merrell, age 82 of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Friday morning, May 4, 2018 at his residence. He was born February 13, 1936 in Carroll County, Georgia, the son of the late Joseph James Merrell and the late Lucy Inez Phillips Merrell. Benjamin at an early age was a farmer and also worked for several cotton mills in the area. He even drove a school bus for Carroll County for a while. He eventually went to work for Southwire Company and retired after 33 years of service. He was ordained as a deacon in June of 1998 at Whooping Creek Church. Benjamin was a well-known and liked man always kind to everyone. He became the moderator of Whooping Creek Primitive Baptist Church in September, 2006; also, was moderator at Emanus and Antioch Churches in Carroll County. He was raised up in the old Baptist churches and was true to his faith. He also preached at other churches in the area. Beside his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Larry James Merrell (1954 or 1955) and three other sons: Stanley James Merrell (1992), Joseph Edgar Rogers (2003) and Michael Anthony Rogers (2012); two daughters-in-law: Yvonne Miller Merrell and Cathy Wilson Rogers; one grandchild, Justin Adam Rogers; two sisters: Infant Drucilla Merrell and Ada Mae Slone Henry; two brothers: Billy George Merrell, Carrollton, Georgia and William Perry Merrell, Duncan, South Carolina; two brothers-in-law: Bruce Sloan, Carrollton, Georgia, and Charles Henry, Carrollton, Georgia. Survivors include his loving wife to whom he was married, February 2, 1968, Charlotte Joyce Justice (Rogers) Merrell; five sons and daughters-in-law: Randy Joe Merrell of Douglasville, Georgia, Danny & Brenda Merrell of Carrollton, Georgia, Roger & Diane Merrell of Roopville, Georgia, Byron & Carla Merrell of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and Jasper & Pamela Merrell of Elkton, Virginia; grandchildren: Jason & Tonya Merrell of Temple, Georgia, Jay & Melissa Claiborne of Douglasville, Georgia, Nicholas & Meagan Merrell of Perry, Georgia, Heather & Eric Denomme of Whitesburg, Georgia, Eric & Thomasina Rogers of Roopville, Georgia, Daniel & Erika Rogers of Temple, Georgia, Rachel Merrell (David Morrisey) of Whitwell, Tennessee, J. J. & Brittany Merrell of Mt. Sidney, Virginia, Brady & Renee Orlando of Bluffton, South Carolina, Samuel & Courtney Merrell of Elkton, Virginia, Rebecca Merrell of Elkton, Virginia, Carl Merrell of Elkton, Virginia, and Cassia Merrell of Elkton, Virginia, and Stephanie Merrell; great grandchildren: Bella Grace Castaneda, Amelia Ruth Castaneda, Madison Claire Orlando, Aubrey Madelyn Rogers, Ansley Journey Rogers, Kayleigh Ann Merrell, Easton Bryant Merrell, Aubrey Nicole Merrell, Coral and Ray Pender, Madison Jewel Merrell, Maci Grace Merrell, Torri Jade Merrell, Caleb Claiborne, Noah Claiborne, Kylie Claiborne, Aubrey Ann Claiborne, Matthew Merrell, Heather Rogers and Vincent Lovvorn, Dusty and Casey Denny, Joshua Rogers, Raymond and Mary Lamb, and Brent “Beamer” Crocker; four great-great grandchildren: Elijah “Eli” Jaiden Lovvorn, Brennan Lamb, Sammie Denny, and Saylor Pender; one living brother and sister-in-law, Harold & Betty Merrell of Carrollton, Georgia; and one living sister and brother-in-law, Beatrice & Ridley Foster of Trenton, Georgia. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 4:00 PM from Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel. Interment will follow in Whooping Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
