David William Dunn, 77, of Pompton Plains, NJ passed away on February 15th, 2024 after enduring Alzheimer’s Disease for 11 years.

David was born on August 20th, 1946 to Ralph and Florence Dunn, in Scranton, PA. After graduating from West Milford High School, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. David was very proud of his time in the service, where he earned several medals including a Good Conduct Medal and Expert Shooting Badge. Following his time in the service, David graduated from Montclair State University with a degree in Education.

David married Joan (White) Dunn in 1981. David and Joan went on to have two children, Michael and Lindsey. While raising his young family, David later earned a Masters in Education from William Paterson University.

He worked at Mahwah High School as a physical education and health teacher, coach (football, basketball, baseball, and wrestling) and athletic director for 35 years. David especially enjoyed his time coaching his children, and never missed a game or meet.

After retirement, David spent his time with his grandchildren, walking his dogs, golfing, and serving at the First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains as an Elder. David had a strong love for animals and especially his golden retrievers (Lucky, Bailey, Shadow, and Bo).

David was predeceased by his father, Ralph Dunn and mother, Florence Dunn. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joan Dunn; his children and their spouses, Michael Dunn, Elaina Petrone, Davis Rideout, and Lindsey Rideout; his grandchildren, Cecelia Rideout and Noah Rideout; his siblings, Carol Warwick, Robert Dunn, Ruth Mitchell, and Kenneth Dunn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 8th at First Reformed Church, Pompton Plains. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church beginning at 9 am. He will be interred at the BG William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ with presentation of Marine Corps Funeral Honors at 2 pm. A repast will follow at 3 pm at The Stone Terrace by John Henry's, 2275 Kuser Road, Hamilton, NJ 08690.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADDF).
