Amelia Erving Obituary

Amelia Erving, 84, of Peoria, passed away at 3:48 a.m. on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Heartland of Peoria. She was born in Peoria on November 16, 1925, a daughter of Luke and Lettie (Goodman) Brown. She married LeRoy Erving on March 30, 1952 in Peoria. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Luke R. Brown, Sr. Amelia is survived by her son, Ronald L. Erving of Iowa City, IA; nephew, Luke R. Brown, Jr. of Peoria; caregivers and sisters-in-law, Deloris Brown of Peoria and Vera Irving of Waco, TX; caregiver and special friend, Mrs. Freddie Walker of Peoria; and special friend, Mrs. Ruth Donaldson of Decatur. In 1948, she earned her bachelors degree from Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO and was a life-member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Peoria. Amelia was a medical records librarian for the State of Illinois, retiring on December 31, 1987, after thirty-eight years of service. She was employed at the Peoria State Hospital and the Zeller Home. She enjoyed listening to Jazz music, fishing, playing bingo and traveling (especially cruises). She will be remembered for her love for family, never gossiping, her strong work ethic, her friendly nature and for being a genuinely nice person. Memorial services to celebrate Amelias life will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Alphonso Lyons, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be one-hour prior to services. The family would like to thank Heartland of Peoria and Passages Hospice of Illinois for their wonderful care.
