Billy Joe Cooke Obituary

Billy Joe Cooke, age 93, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 11, 2024. As his granddaughter said, “he is attending the ultimate church service this morning in Heaven.”

Billy Joe was born February 5, 1931, in Ellis County near Reagor Springs, Texas to Frank and Una (Slocum) Cooke. He was the ninth of 12 children in a close-knit Christian family. Billy Joe went to school in Ennis and graduated in 1950 from Ennis High School. In 1951 he went on a blind date with a beautiful girl named Evelyn Ball, which was set up by his cousin Stacy Cooke. They married later that year on December 7, 1951.

Shortly after getting married Billy Joe was called to serve in the Korean War. After being discharged from the Army they settled down in Waxahachie. They made a beautiful life for themselves, side by side, serving God, raising their family and spending lots of time with their extended family. Billy Joe was a strong, faithful Christian and was a long-time member of the Brown Street (formerly College Street) Church of Christ. He served as a deacon, as well as taught Bible class, for many years.

Growing up Billy Joe was a very sharp kid, already putting his engineering skills to use – probably in more fun ways than practical at the time. After returning from the Army, he started working at Tyler Refrigeration in the engineering department. There he earned patent awards for some of his designs. In 1968, he partnered with his nephew, Randall Dyess, and opened C&D Refrigeration, which later became C&C Refrigeration. Billy Joe, along with his sons Larry and Bryan, ran this successful and well-loved business until the very end, refusing to retire. He loved designing jobs and solving any and all problems. If you needed it fixed, no matter what it was, he would find a way!

Whether you knew Billy Joe as a brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother in Christ, a businessman or a mandolin-playing, Bluegrass extraordinaire, you knew a man of honor, integrity, compassion, unconditional love and generosity beyond measure. You knew a man whose love and faith in God superseded all. To his family, he was our rock, our pillar, our cornerstone. He was our everything and we will miss him more than words can describe.

Billy Joe is survived by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn Cooke; children Larry Cooke and wife Donna, Angie Rager and husband Danny, Christie Novikoff and husband Lee; grandchildren, Jeff Cooke (Linda), Casey Cooke (Rachel), Chelsea Cooney (Chad), Carrie Cooke, Matt Cooke, Daniel Rager (Emily), Amanda Rager, Joe Michiel, Evan and Lily Capshaw; great-grandchildren, Colby, Kyle and Carter; Ethan and Logan; Avery, Jack and Henry; Skyler and Liam; Mason and Wyatt; Elliot; Evelyn (Evee) and Royce; brother, Wendell Cooke and wife Marva; sister, LaRue Dyess; brother-in-law Donald Patman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Bryan Cooke; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Brooks; parents Frank and Una Cooke; brothers, Hollis Cooke and wife Beatrice, Fred Cooke and wife Anna, Ralph Cooke and wife Juanita; sisters, Phama Garritson and husband Loyd, Ina Mae Nash and husband Wesley, Geneiva Dyess and husband Wesley, Frankie Lord and husband Lemuel, Mary Evelyn Patman, Betty Jane Venable and husband Sonny; brother-in-law, Red Dyess.

The family would like to thank those who compassionately helped care for our dad during these last few months. We would especially like to thank Sam and Brittany at Cornerstone Caregiving, as well as Hospice Plus. Most importantly, we would like to thank Brenda Scott who helped us all navigate this journey and provided exceptional care and love for Dad (and Mom, too).

The family requests memorial gifts be made to Brown Street Church of Christ, 2471 Brown Street, Waxahachie, TX 75165..
