Nicholas David Makarchuk Obituary

Nicholas David Makarchuk was born on February 4, 1937 and passed away on December 5, 2023 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Rome, New York to Russian immigrant parents Peter and Tekla Makarchuk. In 1955, Nick joined the Navy and went to bootcamp at NTC Bainbridge, Maryland. Upon graduation he reported for duty aboard the aircraft carrier USS Antietan where he worked in munitions. He was later transferred to the NARF side of NAF El Centro where he met his wife of 64 years, Annie. Upon his discharge from the Navy he worked for Shelburn Refrigeration Company and later on he was an electrician for the Imperial School District then at Imperial Valley College until his retirement. Nick was a friend to everyone, on Wednesday nights at the Moose Lodge he would sit by the door in the smoke room where everyone would stop and chat with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and four brothers.

Nick is survived by his wife Annie, daughter Gaybe, son Nick Jr. (Punk), grandchildren Joshua, Luke, Sarah, one great grandson Logan and many nieces and nephews. He loved them and they loved them back. Even though he would tell them "why don't you go play in the freeway". When he started getting grey and earned a bald spot they started calling him "bald eagle". He loved to travel and always kept a couple bags packed so he could be ready on a moment's notice. His favorite sayings were 'just relax', 'manana' and 'just one more'. He will be loved and missed by all who knew him.

A memorial will be held at the Moose Lodge in Imperial, California on February 24, 2024 at 12pm.

In lieu of flowers please donate to Imperial County Humane Society or Dee's Rescue.
