Gene L. Stoner Obituary

Gene Loyd Stoner, age 84, of Perry unexpectedly passed away in his home on Saturday, February 10, 2024. His Christian funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2024, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrice. The Burial Procession will follow to Bethany Cemetery, and dinner will be served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Hall afterward. Family will receive friends on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 4-8 p.m. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Perry Chapel. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m., and guests will be invited to share memories.

Gene was born on January 5, 1940, in National City, Michigan. He was the third of five sons born to Robert and Mabel (Schneider) Stoner. Gene completed his primary education at Whittemore Public Schools after which he earned an Associate degree from Penn State. One Friday, he went to a church carnival and saw a pretty girl running the duck pond, and that is when he met the love of his life for the very first time. He married Barbara Ann (Forro) on July 29, 1961. Gene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, and St. Isidore Catholic Church in Laingsburg. He was a proud member of Sprinkler Fitters Union Local 669 and retired in 1999 after 38 years. He enjoyed hunting in the U.P., golfing, fishing, MSU sports, Lions football, Tigers baseball, and walking the woods of National City. His greatest joy was his family.

Gene is survived by six of his and Barbara’s seven children; Teresa Stoner, Don Stoner, Kristi Gay, Julie Stoner, Laurie Gay, and Tom Stoner; son-in-law Chris Hart; 19 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; brothers Darryl and Barth Stoner; and many nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Barbara; first-born daughter, Beverly Ann Hart; and brothers Bob and Jack Stoner.

Memorial contributions can be made in Gene’s name to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for Memorial Masses.
