Reverend Olive Delores Bute Obituary

Reverend Olive Delores Bute was born March 23, 1937 in New York City to the late Reverend James G. and Gertrude Brathwaite. She peacefully departed this life on February 6, 2024. Rev. Bute was affectionately known as “Delores”.

She attended and graduated from Maggie L. Walker High school in Richmond, Virginia. After high school she attended school for medical billing and coding.

Reverend Bute worked in the Telecommunication Industry for AT&T as a Switchboard Operator for the majority of her career. After leaving AT&T, she attended School for Naturopathic Medicine and worked as an independent consultant for the Nature’s Sunshine Corporation. While working at Nature’s Sunshine she also worked with another company in the Secretarial field.

Reverend Bute accepted her call to ministry and was licensed to preach in 1994. She was ordained deacon in 1998 and elder in 2000. She enrolled and graduated with a Certificate of Ministry for the Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta, GA. She loved and cared for the sick, the elderly and those living on the margins of society.

Reverend Bute had a beautiful soprano voice and was trained professionally. She loved to sing and could really hit those high notes. She sang on several choirs at Phillips and often was called upon to sing at the Annual and District Conferences. She had a bubbly and joyful personality and received great enjoyment of the little things in life. She loved to visit the sick and shut-in and would sometime take two or three buses to visit them. Delores was very supportive of others and would provide prayers, words of comfort and encouragement to lift the spirit of others.

As a member of Phillips Metropolitan Christian Methodist Church, she organized and headed The Women’s Ministry Group. She was the church Sunday School teacher of the adult class, a member of the Senior Choir, Mass Choir and one of the original members of the GEM Color Tones which was organized by her mother “Trudy” Brathwaite.

Reverend Bute leaves to cherish her memory; her son Landreth Bute; three grandchildren, Cherrelle Alexander, Shanique Alexander and James Bute; five great grandchildren, a sister, Bernice Tillis and a host of other relatives and friends. Reverend Bute was preceded in death by her daughter (Cynthia Alexander) and grandson (William Alexander).
