Friends are like stars, you don’t always see them, but you know they’re always there. Christy Evans

Janice was kindness, love, and the sweetest person for which one could ever hope.

You were my mom and my friend, my advocate and protector. You were so many things—far too many to list—all wonderful, all amazing; you were graceful and gracious, kind and loving beyond measure.

You were my audience of one. Be it drawing, painting, writing, or acting, these are things, are passions and interests, I got from you. So, too, your sense of humor.

Which meant, over and above all the usual, you truly, more than anybody, GOT me. And I got YOU.

And it was awesome. A treasure.

I love you, mom, forever and always, much and bunches. I miss you so much my soul has cracked.

But I’m okay. Or will be. Because you showed me, taught me, through love and loss, through a life lived, how to be okay. To thrive. To embrace joy and whimsy. To do the same for heartbreak and, perhaps especially, the soul-cracks. Because they’re all a part of It.

I’ll never be the same, but I will be okay. We all will.

Because you were in our lives. And you loved us.

And we all loved YOU. Immeasurably.

So, you go on ahead, mom; have a good look around, scout out the place for a bit—see what’s what and where’s where, have that Brandy Manhattan! and I’ll find you again, all settled in and cozy, smiling your smile, at some point down the road.

I’ll bring Scrabble.
