Avalee Joan Adkins Obituary

Avalee Joan Adkins, 69, of Lyburn, West Virginia, born May 21, 1954, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, left her earthly home February 6, 2024, at 12:05 PM to take the hand of her heavenly father and the love of her life, Buddy Adkins, meeting where the Dirt Road ends and the Streets of Gold begin to join together forever, once again in Heaven, a place of perfect peace and rest in the paradise of God.

I Corinthians Chapter 13, Verse 12 reads:
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Imogene Reeves Maxie; her husband, “Buddy” Herbert Lloyd Adkins; three brothers, Avery Maxie, Alex Maxie, and Algar Maxie;
and three hours after Joan’s passing, Sam, their faithful service dog and friend until the end, joined Mommy and Daddy forever.

Joan is survived by two daughters, Althea Jeanine Wells of Lyburn, West Virginia, who shared a home with Mommy and Daddy and Alethea Irene Tomblin of North Mitchell Heights, West Virginia; one son, Bryan Daniel and Angel Adkins of Man, West Virginia; one sister, Avis Jane and Hobert Morgan of Louisa, Kentucky; one brother, Anthony Maxie of Blaine, Kentucky; three grandchildren, Joshua and Jerica Sparks of Salyersville, Kentucky, Craig Aaron Sparks, and Rylee Jeanine Tomblin both of North Mitchell Heights, West Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Callan, Rowan, and Quinley Sparks all of Salyersville, Kentucky. Additionally, Joan leaves behind a host of sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

When Joan wasn’t with her family, you could find her in her place of happiness, her quilting shop. Joan was one of the most talented quilters known, working with Missouri Star, E-quilters, The Tamarack, and also donating quilts for veterans and The American Cancer Society and so many other organizations to raise awareness. She truly was an amazing daughter, wife, mother, and friend with a giving heart.

Services will be held at Shining Light United Baptist Church at Chapmanville, West Virginia. Visitation will be Thursday, February 15, 2024, from 6 PM to 9 PM and two hours prior to services Friday. Funeral service will be Friday, February 16, 2024, at 1 PM.

Officiating the service will be Pastor Rick Adkins of Shining Light United Baptist Church, Pastor Michael Hartwell of Verdunville Church of God, Uncle and Pastor Joe Sparks of Columbus, Ohio, and Matthew Tackett, Pastor Associate of Victory Tabernacle Church of God.

Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Pecks Mill, WV, where she will be lovingly laid to rest beside her husband, Buddy.

Pallbearers will be her two grandsons, Joshua and Craig and friends.

A special thank you to Matthew Tackett, who holds a special place in our hearts. He was more like a son to Joan and a brother to her daughters while growing up in Dehue, West Virginia, making a lifetime of memories. Matt and Jill, always know you are our Family.

Also a special thank you to Richard and Dora Johnson for Psalms 23 and so much more, Bea Varney, Missy Varney, Brooke Brewer, Susan Baldwin, Eunice Runyon, Karen Sprye, Crystal Scites, Amber Ellis, and so many others for their encouragement and compassion to keep going like Mommy would want.

Evans Funeral Home in Chapmanville, West Virginia, was chosen for our Mommy’s arrangements because they were so kind, professional, and assisting in every way during the passing of our Daddy just a short 11 months ago.
