Bernard Allen Jenks Obituary

Bernard A. Jenks, age 95, of Stanton, went home to be with his Lord and Saviour on Friday, February 9, 2024, passing away at his daughter’s home under the loving care of his family and Corewell Hospice.

A farmer through and through, Bernie loved working in the agricultural sector. He started his career working for Bolthouse Farms and ended his career as the Plant Manager for Miedema Produce. Bernie also owned and operated the Sinclair Gas station in Sheridan for several years. When he wasn’t working, Bernie could be found tending to his gardens, mowing lawns, plowing snow, golfing, woodworking, fishing, and helping friends and family out. As he grew older he picked up painting as a hobby and often joked that the secret to a long life was a daily donut and coffee.

However, the two most important things to Bernie was first his faith and then his family. Bernie was a passionate and active member of the Gideons International. He was a member of the Evergreen Free Methodist Church in Sheridan and for the past few years, as his health declined, he attended the Sheridan First Congregational Church with his daughter.

Surviving Bernie are his children, Marcia Sawdy of Stanton; Glenda Benedict (Clair Whitmore) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Steve (Pam) Jenks of Hudsonville; Marion (Butch) Truesdale of Celina, Ohio; grandchildren, Scott (Jamie) Sawdy of Big Rapids; Kathy (Jeff) Otteson of Grand Rapids; Brian Sawdy of Stanton; Robert Sawdy, Jr. of Stanton; Sue Bresnahan of Sand Lake; Carla Spanbauer of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Nathan (Kathy) Carnes of Coldwater, Ohio; Jermey (Beckie) Jenks of Zeeland; Tabatha Bratu of Grandville; Michelle (Steve) Brancaleone of Celina, Ohio; Herbie (Mika) Truesdale of Cincinnati, Ohio; Mike (Dani) Truesdale of California; Robin Truesdale of Lima, Ohio; 31 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; sister, Carol (Ken) Scott of Hudsonville; and lots of nieces and nephews.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Howard & Gertrude (Beardslee) Jenks; his wife, Velma (Newcomb) Jenks; sons-in-law, Bob Sawdy and Ken Benedict; siblings, Stanley Jenks; Sarah Piper; Gaylord Jenks; Helen Miller; and Barbara McGregor.

Bernie’s life is being celebrated on Saturday, February 24th at the Sheridan First Congregational Church (113 S. Main St.) with visitation from 10:30 to 11:30 AM and his Memorial Service beginning at 11:30 AM.

For those wanting to remember Bernie with a memorial donation, the family suggests you direct them to one of the following: Sheridan First Congregational Church, Evergreen Free Methodist Church, or Gideons International.
